Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest particular calls made by the official, echoing the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
