New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these treatments need to be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
